I wander secret gardens at midnight.
Fingers gently caress the roses –
Careful –
Don’t prick the soft flesh on thorns.
Underneath the light of the moon
Shadows take form as corporeal shapes
Figures – both specter and knight.
I wander secret gardens at midnight.
The fog borne of rain that has passed
Lingers in the too-cold air
Above the too-warm ground
Caressing my bare ankles and feet
Like a snake wrapped tight
Around a vine.
I wander secret gardens at midnight.
Undercurrents of fear mixed with curiosity
Nudges me along the path
Checking every bush and flowerbed
For something magical.
Or someone who doesn’t belong.
Oh – what a thrill.
I wander secret gardens at midnight.
Is my lover hidden under trees?
Shielded by the cover of night,
Waiting to be plucked from the dark?
As real in the fauna and flora
As he is in my darkest, stormiest nightmares?
Does he wish to remain concealed?
I wander secret gardens at midnight.
Stirred from the deep throes of sleep
Thrashing wildly on a hard mattress
Until my eyes are pried open by fingers
Begging me to see.
Calling me to the place outside my window
Urgent and insistent the time is nigh.
I wander secret gardens at midnight.
Searching, following, losing my head
Until one, blissful night –
Finally, finally, all is revealed.
A dark cloak, scythe high to the sky,
The full moon the last sight accompanying
My last, deep breath.
I wander secret gardens at midnight.
Always wandering.
Never living.
Never leaving.
