Who do you see

When you look in the mirror?

That girl from before—

I don’t see her.

We drifted apart

Like rafts in the ocean

Separated by harsh winds

Howling, raging, continuously

In motion.

You’re so far away

I can’t clearly see

Your face

Just an effigy of you,

Lifeless and drawn

Stands in her place.

To think I used to know you—

I mean, really know you,

For so, so long.

Now we don’t talk—

I don’t even know your

Favorite song.

It’s amazing, this life,

With all the people

On the planet.

Things change in an instant

We can never plan it.

But for a long time

I thought you and me were solid.

Nothing breaking through us—

Tough as Colorado marble, or granite.

But then the shift came

Slowly, then all at once.

You removed me from your life

Like a scab you rubbed raw

Peeled, and flicked away.

My blood left etched in your knee

Harder to clean off

But able to be hidden

Beneath a bandage.

And even though that cut healed

And you moved on with your life

I bet the scar is still there.

You look in the mirror

Brush your hair and teeth

Spit

That same familiar itch

Clawing at your knee.

And all the while you scratch

I bet you look in the mirror

And see me.
