I saw it all in a dream…
A family together
Strong, no matter the weather
Content in their little corner
Love keeping them ever-warmer.
They mastered the give-and-take
Admitted when they made mistakes
Said their sorries and quick to forgive
An idyllic, perfect way to live.
That was the way things were
Til’ the night lightning cracked
Casting a glow across the sky
A shift in temperature on the rise.
First, it touched the father
Snaking up his arms and legs
Seeping into his heart while he slept
At cruelty and blaming, he became adept.
He bellowed and roared at his wife
Said she ruined him, destroyed his life
Accused her of taking and taking
No apology now for mistakes he was making.
In return, the wife screamed and pled
Questioning why she ever took his bed
Leaving her daughters to fend for their lives
Forced to grow up too quickly to survive.
The Eden they created, now nowhere in sight
No fire nor warmth to comfort them at night
Loving words replaced by heated insults
Destroying peace in the house which they built.
The blackened heart of the father never wavered
Loneliness and despondency, he now favored
Calling his daughters foul names
Any chance he took to stab them with shame.
The daughters absorbed it all inside
Nowhere could be found to run and hide
The ugliest parts of their hearts emerged
Hatred for one another grew and surged.
No longer a unit, the daughters warred
Hurtling words more piercing than swords
Tears gushed from their eyes, filling the rivers
At night cold and alone, their empty bodies shivered.
No one would save them —
Eden would never be restored.
This dream has no happy ending
Only a tale of a family, broken and torn.
