I awoke from a dream with
A deep ache in my chest
Longing for something
That once used to be.
I don’t recall where or why
But I had traveled
Back in time
To a tropical hotel, unfamiliar.
There was a sense of urgency
In this dream
That I must fix something
In the past, to help the present.
I ran all over the island
Jumping, fighting, fleeing, trying
And found myself in a restaurant
Filled with people.
I was running from a bad guy
Looking for a place to hide
When my gaze hit the bar
And a brick hit my heart.
It was you.
Vibrant, talkative, that big smile
A beer in one hand
Untroubled, carefree face
The one I remember you had.
The sense of urgency vanished
I walked slowly to you
Like a silent fairy floating
Across the floor on tip-toes.
You turned around
When you felt my approach
And I felt crushed and joyous
All at once.
It was the you I used to know
The one I wished had stayed
The person I ache for
Sometimes when I wish.
I said hello and you said it back
It was a dream, of course,
So I don’t remember what we said
But you didn’t know me.
I was visiting you from the future
At a time when I would have been
A young girl
The sweet time where happy memories live.
We talked and talked
I wanted to stay forever
To know who you once were
As I am now.
But as all time travel stories are
I needed to go
My mission complete
The timeline to be restored.
So I said goodbye
And I wept the entire run
Back to safety
Back to the future.
I awoke, wondering,
Is it possible to visit
A past version of someone
Who you really love
And wish was here now?
