She laid her head back onto the soft pillow, which dipped inward on itself like a bowl gently placed in water. The anticipation of another chance to see him, maybe even touch him, made it difficult to even fall asleep. For weeks now, she continued dreaming of a man she’d never encountered in her waking life. Not so much was it his looks that drew her in, but rather the energy she felt radiating from his body. It called to her. Like doomed fisherman lured into the beautiful song of a mermaid. Of course she hadn’t mentioned this phenomenon to another soul. They would tease and judge, remind her again that there was no reason to long for a man in her dreams amongst all the real men out in the world. And so she lay there in excited anticipation for one, two, two and a half hours, before sleep finally overtook her. Once again, she found herself outside at night, in a beautiful nightgown, barefoot, chilled by the breeze. The sky was clear. This time was different, though, in that she was in a graveyard. It was the kind you would see in older parts of the world, with ornately designed headstones and gargoyles and crypts. She wandered around, admiring the unique names engraved in thick, swirled text on the tombs. A crow cawed, startling her. And there he was. The stranger stood before her in his fully glory. Dark hair, dark eyes, slightly pink cheeks from the cold. He held out a hand to her. She hesitated before taking it, vaguely aware that this was a dream, and that any other time she tried to touch him, she would wake up. Don’t be frightened. She heard in her mind. He had not spoken aloud. Of course, she took a giant step backward, afraid. You can trust me. He said. He reached is hand out even closer to her. After all the longing and desire for his energy, the hope to touch him just once, and here she was: afraid. He smiled, and she noticed a dimple in his left cheek. All at once the energy around them shifted. The intense pull to be near him, to touch him, to be touched by him — gone. Replaced by fear. She turned on her heel and ran. She made it no more than ten large steps, and there he was again. He smiled and reached for her. And she woke up.
