I watched you take your first few steps

Now I’ve seen you take your last breaths

Somehow all I can think about

Is how you won’t be here next summer.

When I think I’ve cried every tear

There’s a scent or a sound —

It tricks me into thinking you’re near.

I’m here all alone and I don’t wanna let you go.

I miss holding you tight as we watched it storm

The lightning and thunder whipping our hair

But together we were always snug and warm.

You were my best friend – you are my best friend

We cared for each other in a way only humans and pups can

And right now I can’t imagine never seeing you again.

I keep your collar by the window at your favorite spot

The one where you’d lie down while I did yoga

Or to watch the people about their day below us.

It’s almost like you’re still here and I’m not alone

No clue how long I’ll miss you but I do know

Right now, I don’t wanna let you go.
