We heard the “boom!” then the “pop!” first.

Then the car barreled into view.

It hit the side of the cement guard.

And instantly burst to flame.

They arrived on the scene fast.

We waited, anxiously, to see someone, anyone emerge.

But nobody ever did.

The car was charred and black in three minutes flat.

They couldn’t move in closer until it was safe.

And it wasn’t until five minutes later that I realized.

We may have just witnessed the final moments.

Another “pop!” and more flame.

And a striking, humbling feeling:

We are fragile beings.
